Every PG we cover in the city, by the area you'd actually live in.

Most PG hunting in Chennai comes down to one question: how far are you willing to sit in traffic. Start with the area, not the listing.

What living in Chennai actually asks of you

The commute decides the area
Most of our coverage runs along the IT corridor, from Taramani in the north down to Siruseri. The stretch is long enough that two areas twelve kilometres apart can mean an hour's difference twice a day. Pick the area from where you work, then compare rents inside it.
Rail reaches the northern half, not the southern
The MRTS serves Velachery, Taramani and Thiruvanmiyur, so the northern end of the corridor has a rail option that does not sit in OMR traffic. Further south there is nothing yet — Metro Corridor 3 will run the length of OMR to SIPCOT, but no part of it is operating today.
Water is a question worth asking
Metro water does not reach every street on the corridor, and a lot of PGs run on borewell plus tanker deliveries through the summer. Ask what the supply is and how many hours a day it runs before you pay a deposit, not after.
The northeast monsoon is the real test
October to December is when the city's low-lying pockets flood, and some of them are on the corridor. If you are moving in during the dry months, ask what the street looked like last December.
Your deposit is capped by law
Under the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants Act, 2017, a deposit cannot exceed three months' rent and must be returned within a month of you moving out. General information, not legal advice.

Questions people ask about PGs in Chennai

Which area of Chennai should I look for a PG in?

Start from your office and work outward, because commute time is what most of the decision turns on. If you work on the IT corridor, the area pages here cover the stretch from Taramani south to Siruseri, each with its own rent distribution. If your work might move into the city, Velachery is the usual hedge because it reaches both.

How much does a PG cost in Chennai?

It varies enough by area that a single city average would mislead you. Each area page publishes the actual distribution by sharing configuration with the number of rooms behind every figure, so you can compare like for like. Taramani and Thiruvanmiyur sit at the expensive end of the corridor, Padur and Kelambakkam at the lowest.

Is there a metro to the IT corridor yet?

Not yet. Corridor 3 runs from Madhavaram to SIPCOT and will serve the whole OMR stretch, but nothing on the corridor is operating today and the line is currently tracking to 2027. The MRTS through Taramani, Thiruvanmiyur and Velachery is the working rail option in the meantime.

How much deposit can a PG in Chennai ask for?

No more than three months' rent, and it has to come back to you within one month of you moving out. That is Section 11 of the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants Act, 2017. Get the agreement in writing whatever the amount. General information, not legal advice.
